Alberta Health Services is inviting applications for an Adult Psychiatrist with specialist qualifications and interest in working with youths aged 16 to 25 within our Young Adult Services. The post is primarily a community-based practice with our Access Open Minds Team, which is 0.2FTE. The position entails providing leadership and direct clinical care to young people aged 16-25 served by the Edmonton and Sub-Urban Mental Health Clinics. These teams operate under the Adult Community Mental Health Service and provide service to our most vulnerable young adults with acute, complex, and chronic mental health needs often comorbid with substance abuse, and some of them will require management under CTO.
We are looking for a dedicated psychiatrist interested in working with youths with sensitivity, empathy, and compassion in dealing with young people with complex psychiatric needs and their families/carers. Our service emphasizes the recovery model with the active involvement of the youths, their family/carers, and their family doctors.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide specialist assessments and diagnoses for youths with mental health difficulties, including those with acute and complex presentations and diagnostic uncertainties. The successful candidate will conduct initial assessments, treatment care planning, pharmacological & non-pharmacological management, outpatient clinic and post-discharge follow-ups at the Edmonton Mental Health Clinics. The post holder will work with other services, including other Adult Mental Health teams, Addiction Services, Community Forensic Services, Inpatients Services, Family Doctor Practices, and Primary Care Networks within the Edmonton Zone, to provide excellent clinical care for this vulnerable group. The post holder is expected to participate in weekly multidisciplinary team meetings and provide support to the team clinicians as required.
The post holder will provide clinical leadership to our Access Open Minds Team and work collaboratively with all multidisciplinary team members, including fellow psychiatrists, clinicians, occupational therapists, social workers, speech and language therapists, psychologists, and other staff. The post holder will support the service to increase and maximize access for young people with mental health difficulties to the available services within the Addiction and Mental Health Service in Edmonton Zone through their collaborative work with other mental health services within the zone.
In addition to providing excellent clinical care, the successful candidate is expected to be actively involved in the team's strategic development by working with the leadership to guide the development of the service to align with the strategic direction of Alberta Health Services Four Foundational Strategies.
The successful candidate will participate in quality improvement initiatives within the program. There are opportunities to participate in research within the Division of Community Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta.The successful candidate is expected to be actively involved in training medical students and residents and, as such, is expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague Appointment within the Department of Psychiatry, which will be considered a separate process via the University of Alberta.
There will be an expectation for the successful candidate to participate in the Community on Call program for the Access 24/7 program within the zone.

The successful candidate must have or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Preferred candidates will have completed specialist training in General Adult Psychiatry and must have specialist qualifications, such as FRCPC or equivalent. Experience in working with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team will be an advantage but not mandatory. This position is not open to sponsorship.
