CMD PLC Short Stay Unit Part-time Job3 months ago Doctor / Physician Calgary 21 views
The position is critical to the coordination and organization of PLC Unit 37 the mental health short stay unit (SSU) that is a regional unit that serves the entire Calgary Zone. This is a seven day per week unit (the only mental health inpatient to operate as such) and is a unique unit in the Province of Alberta. This unit also processes approximately 1/3 of all mental health inpatient admission in the Calgary Zone. This unit is seen as a vital piece of Calgary Mental Health infrastructure, consequently, the SSU CMD position is a leadership role critical to the coordination of patient care and departmental needs. Given the nature of the inpatient population that this unit serves there are a possible 4 high observation spaces which are almost always utilized given the preponderance of aggressive and violent patients usually in association with illicit drug use. This requires a high degree of attention to patient care and safety. The PLC SSU operates within the boundaries of operational best practice and has the lowest length of stay for any high-obs capable inpatient unit in the province.
The SSU CMD daily keeps an eye on LOS for each patient, facilitating rounds to ensure the unique teamwork on the SSU continues to flow seamlessly while the provision of outstanding clinical care continues. This unit provides the most acute psychiatric care and on a daily basis there is a waitlist of patients scattered amongst the zonal hospitals awaiting admission onto this unit. This waitlist must be managed on a daily basis and so there is pressure to treat patients intensively and to guide the physicians on the unit to ensure timely discharges. The CMD is involved in discussions with various stakeholders to aid in the process of discharging the patient safely. The CMD must be aware of the movement of all of these patients, and also ensure that physicians are able to provide the best care possible without burnout.
The CMD will also coordinate transfers from the SSU to various mental health inpatient units across the zone where clinically indicated. Without a CMD leader on this unit there would likely be more acuity on the unit and much more burn-out pressures on the physicians providing care to patients on such an intensive mental health unit. LOS would also likely begin to creep up and there would be less coordination as is essential for a unit that processes ~1/3 of all mental health admissions in the Calgary Zone.
