Additional Notes About Athabasca

The Town of Athabasca is a diverse rural community located 150 km North of Edmonton on Highway 2. Athabasca is the home of a Healthcare Centre, a fully accredited facility with acute care beds and continuing care beds servicing a growing population of 11,360. This area includes the Town of Athabasca, a large portion of the County of Athabasca, a portion of the MD of Opportunity (which includes Calling Lake), 11 Hamlets and 5 Summer Villages.

Athabasca is a service hub of the energy communities of Ft.McMurray, Wabasca and Lac La Biche. It is home to forestry, agriculture, oil and gas development and Athabasca University. Al Pac(Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries) is known for being the best pulp company of the world, Athabasca University supports approximately 37,000 students through on-line distance learning. The region is continually experiencing growth due to industrial development of Alberta’s Energy Corridor and supports numerous energy and natural resource companies.

Although many might expect that rural living sacrifices the benefits of urban centres, Athabasca offers a harmonious balance of both worlds. While residents take in the wide-open spaces, endless outdoor opportunities and small town experience, they may also enjoy an experience of a larger urban centre. Similar to that of a large city, we have many retail opportunities. We have a thriving arts scene which is best on display at the Nancy Appleby Theatre, where we host musical and theatrical performances.

We are home to the Athabasca Regional Multiplex, an indoor sports and leisure facility that hosts hockey, curling, soccer, baseball and musical performances. To learn more about our facility please visit: http://athabascamultiplex.ca/ The Athabasca Golf and Country Club situated along the Athabasca River has 18 scenic holes and has much to offer a golfer. It is known as one of the most scenic golf courses in Alberta.

Winter sports entail snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snow shoeing. In summer, free time is taken up with the numerous lakes; fishing, water skiing, swimming, boating and camping. Athabasca has many different denominations, so finding a church is not a problem. There are also numerous walking trails that are well used by hikers, joggers and bikers. For those that are pursuing the healthy living experience, Athabasca has much to offer. Don’t forget to visit the Farmer’s Market for farm fresh produce.
