Job Description

Are you a family or emergency physician looking for something new and flexible? Consider joining the Health Link Virtual MD team!

**Services are provided virtually for three (3) or six (6) hour shifts. The service operates from 1000 to 2200 daily, no night shifts**

Alberta Health Services Health Link program is a free health advice and information line for Albertans with non-emergency health inquiries. Health Link providers work with each caller/patient to determine and recommend the most appropriate care for the patient to access. In many cases this includes referrals to after-hours clinics and services, including some Primary Care Networks. The core of the Health Link service is a team of registered nurses, supported by well-established clinical guidelines and pathways, who are able to assess callers and their medical needs, including how urgently they should seek care and in what setting (emergency departments, urgent care centres, primary care providers, self-care, etc). Through the COVID-19 Pandemic in particular, Health Link has proven to be a critical resource to Albertans and the health system.

One element of the pandemic response has been to expand the Health Link service to include a virtual physician secondary assessment and triage service. Services are provided virtually for three (3) or six (6) hour shifts. The service operates from 1000 to 2200 daily, no night shifts. Training is provided but you should be comfortable doing phone and video assessments. Charting is in an easy-to-use EMR.

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:

During a scheduled shift, the Virtual MD physician provides the following services by telephone and Zoom:

  1. Provide clinical services through comprehensive virtual primary care assessments, which includes a focused or comprehensive medical history, and, as appropriate, a video-based physical exam. This exam may include general appearance, work-of-breathing, joint colour and range of motion, hydration status, mental status exam, ability to bear weight, activity level, extra-ocular movements, facial symmetry, and tremors, among other aspects of the physical exam.
  2. Review of relevant lab results and/or medical records as appropriate via Netcare and where available, AHS medical records such as Connect Care
  3. Assess and triage patients health care needs, i.e. virtually managing patient care as appropriate, directing patients to urgent care centres or emergency departments if clinically indicated, directing patients to primary care including pharmacies as clinically appropriate, etc.
  4. Documentation of clinical care and advice provided.
  5. Provide health promotion and patient education, and support chronic disease management and treatment.
  6. Participate in Virtual MD team education and quality improvement initiatives, such as role alignment between non-clinical, nursing and physician members of the Health Link program.
  7. Participate in data generation and collection to enable performance indicators monitoring.
  8. Contribute as a member of the interdisciplinary team by coordinating work and cooperating with members of the team including regular attendance at team meetings and relevant professional development.
  9. Participate in professional relationship building and communication with community physicians and other family physicians, as required.
