This is a part time position for an AB licensed Psychiatrist to do inpatient consults and follow ups with the South Health Campus Inpatient Addictions and Mental Health Program. There is opportunity to do Outpatient clinic days as well. Partaking in delivery of ECT will be expected.

We are an acute care adult mental health inpatient unit imbedded in a tertiary care hospital. We have Psychiatry ICU beds as well as regular inpatient Psychiatry beds. We are also the designated COVID+ mental health inpatient unit in the City.
The ability to see new inpatient consults, do follow ups, and discharge back to the community in a timely manner will be expected. Length of stay for each psychiatrist will be monitored and there is expectation to meet the Departmental standard of care on inpatients.
The psychiatrist will be able to work well with their colleagues and other allied health care professionals in a team setting. Attendance at daily Kardex rounds and weekly case conferences will be expected. Knowledge of other existing community resources will be an asset. Legible and timely documentation and respectful communication with colleagues will be expected. Following the mandate of the unit, being diligent with IP&C guidelines, and following the direction from the Department of Psychiatry will be mandatory. Attending monthly Psychiatry staff meetings will be expected.
The site offers bifrontal ECT treatment to inpatients three times a week. The successful candidate will be expected to complete the appropriate training for ECT and administer the same while on the ECT roster, shared with other psychiatrists.
A major part of this role is clinical work but it will also include an educational role in the teaching of residents and medical students. The Psychiatrist will also be expected to do call at the South Health Campus site. Flexibility and willingness to provide vacation coverage for other colleagues will be required.

A successful candidate for the position should have:

  • Recent experience (residency included) of working with an acute and chronic population
  • Successful completion of MCC and Royal College specialty exams
  • Successful work experience on a multidisciplinary team
  • Recent understanding of acute and sub-acute adult treatment for mental health concerns
  • Understanding of departmental demands and working with departmental goals to meet safety, length of stay, and patient satisfaction requirements
  • Ability to participate in a call roster with and without resident support
  • Success in education with residents in psychiatry
  • Success interpersonally with patients, families and colleagues
  • Ability to provide timely and accurate documentation and partake actively in discharge planning
  • Ability to take direction and feedback and perform within the mandate of the program and hospital
  • Foundations in psychotherapeutic work, including CBT and DBT.

There is opportunity for this position to expand to outpatient clinic days on site at SHC as the need arises. There will also be opportunity to provide ECT on site.
