Medical Lead - CZ Palliative & End of Life Care (PEOLC) Part-time Job

Reporting to the Central Zone Medical Director and in collaboration with the Zone Palliative Care and End-of-Life Speciality Team Manager and the Director of Central Zone Transitions, the Palliative Care Medical Lead will be responsible for leading the clinical components of the Palliative Care Program in the Central Zone. The current Central Zone PEOLC clinical team includes 6 Family Physician consultants and 16 Palliative Care Resource Nurses/Nurse Practitioners providing care to patients and families at home, in hospitals and in various congregate living facilities including Hospice Care beds throughout the Zone.

This will include collaboration on palliative care program development and reporting/advising appropriate AHS Central Zone program administrators on palliative care program activities, issues, and concerns and liaise with other programs in the Central Zone to assure integration of those programs with palliative care, where appropriate.

It is essential that this person be a strong advocate for Palliative and End-of-Life Care within this Zone and also provincially.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide in-person and virtual (telephone and e-referral) consultation to Family Physicians, specialist colleagues and nurse practitioners/nurses re: medical care to patients requiring palliative care services in Central Zone (billable as fee for service)
  • Represent PEOLC on the Zone Family Medicine Executive
  • Represent the Central Zone PEOLC program at regularly scheduled Zone and/ or Provincial level. This may involve being on Zone and/or Provincial committees; most of these meetings are held virtually.
  • Regularly be available for meetings, in person or by phone, with the Central Zone Palliative Care Dyad (Director, Central Zone Transitions) to discuss program planning, including accreditation activities and surveys and other issues that may arise. Participate in interviews for nursing and other team members. Provide updates on palliative care activities to the Zone PEOLC Manager and Dyad Partner.
  • Be available to other members of the team to discuss any issues within the program that may arise in their particular areas.
  • Preparation of the Palliative Care Physician On-call schedule and submission for Specialist On-Call payments.
  • Participation on the Palliative Care On-Call Schedule
  • Attend Zone and provincial meetings regarding palliative care on an as needed basis in consultation with the Central Zone Palliative Care Dyad. This includes attending at least two team meetings per year.
  • Act as Preceptor to medical students and residents: R2 Rural Family Medicine Residents completing compulsory 2 week rotations on the Red Deer Regional Hospital Palliative Care Consult Service; R3 Enhanced Skills in Palliative Care Residents from University of Calgary completing rural electives; other residents and medical students that wish to complete palliative care electives (as can be accommodated)
  • Collaborate with the Palliative Care Team in the development and presentation of educational resources including Pallium CanadasLearningEssentialApproachestoPalliativeandEnd-of-LifeCare(LEAP) courses.
  • Maintain continuing medical education requirements, a portion of which must include palliative care, in order to stay updated in current practice and emerging trends in palliative care.

Must hold a valid and relevant license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

  • Preferred: Fellowship in Palliative Care or Enhanced Skills (R3) Year of training in Palliative Care or CCFP Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care
  • Without formal palliative care training: at least 2 years clinical experience in providing primary palliative care and an interest in pursuing CCFP Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care
  • Certification as a LEAP Facilitator or willingness to pursue training to become a LEAP Facilitator
