The Section of Neonatology, Department Pediatrics, invites applications for a full-time Neonatologist. The successful candidate will have 70% time for clinical activities and 30% allocated to administration, research and education.

Candidates must have completed residency training in Pediatrics and received certification in Pediatrics by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or equivalent, and must also have completed Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine accredited by the RCPSC or equivalent. In addition, the successful candidate must be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Neonatal Care is provided at 5 Hospitals within the Calgary Zone; Level III Neonatology at a stand-alone NICU at Alberta Childrens Hospital (ACH), Level III Perinatology at the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC), and Level II Perinatology at the Peter Lougheed Hospital, Rockyview General Hospital, and South Health Campus. The Neonatal Program includes a nationally recognized Neonatal Follow-up Clinic (NFC) at the ACH and a successful neonatal-perinatal medicine residency program with up to 15 trainees.

The successful candidate will be based at Peter Lougheed Centre NICU, a level 2 facility, with the highest delivery rate in the Calgary Zone. Additional clinical duties will be at one of the 2 level 3 NICUs.

There are 27 funded neonatal beds at the PLC. Expertise in quality improvement initiatives in moderate to late preterm infants, and discharge planning for complex extremely preterm infants will be an asset. Interest and experience in families experiencing addiction and mental health issues, trauma informed care, family integrated and family centered care will be required. Educational opportunities include mentoring clinical assistants, pediatric residents, neonatal perinatal fellows, clinical clerks in neonatal care. The successful candidate will assist with further developing this level 2 facility, working alongside the interdisciplinary team as well as a strong obstetric, MFM, pediatric, family medicine and midwifery team. Initiatives include development of a level 2B unit, rooming-in and social supports for families experiencing addiction, augmenting the mother-baby dyad, and skin-to-skin care.

The Section of Neonatology provides comprehensive neonatal care to Southern Alberta, which has an annual birth rate of approximately 24,000. There are a total of 132 Level II and III beds amongst five (5) Calgary Zone Acute Care Hospitals, admitting an average of 2800 neonates annually.

The Department of Pediatrics has over 300 clinical and academic faculty members who are part of the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary.

Qualifications:

Qualifications include an MD or equivalent, certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Pediatrics or equivalent certification from another professional association, and the completion of a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine accredited by the RCPSC or equivalent. Candidates must be eligible for a Practice Permit from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and for medical staff privileges from Alberta Health Services. Candidates must hold active certification in NRP.

The Neonatologist will be primarily located at the Peter Lougheed Centre level 2 NICU but may also provide service at the other NICU sites (ACH, FMC, RGH and/or SHC).
