Alberta Health Services in partnership with The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry invites applications for an academic ophthalmologist with fellowship training in ocular oncology.

We seek an outstanding clinician investigator who would be committed to advancing the vision of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (OVS) at the University of Alberta which is to lead patient-centered eye care through integrated service, education and research. The clinical focus of the position will be to see and manage adult and pediatric patients with eye cancers as part of a collaborative Provincial ocular oncology program, which has patients referred from Western and Northern Canada. The collaborative, multi-city nature of this program is unique and a benefit to reducing barriers to access of care for patients. The strengths of this program include research and development of small tumor treatments, and the delivery of radiation through plaque brachytherapy using modern conformal techniques.

This position will comprise clinical, research, educational and leadership roles with percentage time allocation in each area dependent on the applicant's strengths and potential contributions. The successful candidate will be expected to spend at least 50% of their time seeing and managing oncology patients. They will be provided clinical and operating room time at the Eye Institute of Alberta (Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Stollery Childrens hospital).

There will also be an expectation to serve oncology patients at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary and appropriate clinic as well as operating room time will be provided to support this.

There is an expectation to collaborate with the current ocular oncology team for patient care including combined clinics, regular tumor board meetings, teleoncology and brachytherapy (at the Cross Cancer Institute).

Supporting the continuous advancement of the world class ocular oncology research program is expected. Currently this includes opportunities for students in Ophthalmology and Medical Physics, medical students, residents, fellows and working closely with Dr. Ezekiel Weis (provincial medical lead of the Alberta Ocular Brachytherapy Program). To support and expand the current research team, a research interest in imaging of ocular and orbital disease as well as early treatment of uveal melanoma is an asset. There will be an expectation to take regular call within the Department on-call schedule in Edmonton, and to participate in medical student, resident and fellow teaching. The successful candidate will be eligible for a special continuing academic appointment with the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, at an appropriate rank. There will also be an opportunity for cross appointment to the University of Calgary.

Applicants will have an MD, MD/Masters, or MD/PhD and must have completed residency training in Ophthalmology, be certified or eligible to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for clinical practice as an ophthalmologist in Alberta. Applicants should also have at least one year of fellowship training in ocular oncology.
