The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with the Edmonton Zone Palliative Care Program, Alberta Health Services, invites qualified Palliative Care Physicians to apply for a position within the, Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

The academic component of this position is within the Division of Palliative Care Medicine. The Division comprises physicians, psychologists and scientists who are engaged in the advancement of palliative care and psycho-oncology, and whose collective efforts have led to the Divisions national and international recognition for training and research. The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry has 21 Departments, active undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs with over 500 graduates annually. The clinical component of this position provides frontline patient care throughout Edmonton and surrounding areas with the Edmonton Zone Palliative Care Program (EZPCP) and is primarily based at the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI) as a palliative care consultant with the Department of Symptom Control and Palliative Care. The CCI is a freestanding, integrated cancer treatment and research facility that functions as the tertiary oncology referral centre for Northern Alberta. Duties of the physician include direct and indirect care for CCI outpatients and inpatients as part of an interdisciplinary team and in collaboration with oncology providers, primary care providers and other specialists; participation in the clinical and professional activities of the team (e.g., clinical team meetings, staff meetings, Journal Club, presenting at Grand Oncology Rounds); clinical and small group teaching of medical students and residents; contribution to research conducted within the Department; and site-specific administrative duties associated with performance of clinical work.

Duties

This position is a 1.0 full-time equivalent and will comprise of approximately 50% Clinical, 10% Administrative, 25% Research and 15% Education.

The successful candidate will pursue a program of palliative care research that ideally enhances existing research strengths in the Division and will apply for grants, conduct studies, disseminate knowledge through presentations and publications, serve as a resource for other members of the Division with respect to research methods and strategy, and provide opportunities for research collaboration. They will forge collaborations with researchers external to the Division and participate in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in palliative care, including bedside teaching, seminars, research supervision and rounds, as well as contribute to committees and assume leadership roles appropriate to their stage of professional development.

Qualified physicians will have completed the CFPC (College of Family Physicians of Canada) Added Year of Competency training in Palliative Care or the RCSPC (Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Canada) Palliative Medicine subspecialty or equivalent education, or will have acquired several years of experience as a palliative care consultant. Experience in leadership, research or education in Palliative Medicine would be an asset. Interested physicians must be eligible for a full, unrestricted license in Alberta and hold current CMPA coverage. Physicians with CCFP or FRCPC degrees will be given priority.
