The Palliative & End of Life Care (PEOLC) Program, Alberta Health Services - Calgary Zone is currently accepting applications for qualified Palliative Care Consultant Physicians. Specifically, we are seeking Urban Community Palliative Home Care Consultant Physicians, either part time or full time.
Alberta Health Services Calgary Zone includes the City of Calgary as well as a large area of south-central Alberta extending from Banff National Park to areas surrounding Calgary. Palliative care consultations are provided by inter-professional teams consisting of physicians, advanced practice nurses and other team members, and are delivered in a variety of service sites such as Acute Care, Homecare, Hospices, Outpatient Clinics, Rural facilities, and an Intensive Palliative Care Unit (IPCU).
Urban Calgary is divided into 4 cardinal-based quadrants: NW, NE, SW, SE. Each quadrant has a dedicated team of Palliative Home Care nurses serving as Case Managers for the clients/patients, as well as, a care manager, social worker, spiritual care practitioner, occupational therapist, registered respiratory therapist and a physiotherapist. A physician consultant is assigned to each quadrant. The qualified physician consultant would have an interest and/or experience in providing palliative medical consultations for home/community-based patients. The patients own Family Physician retains the role of most responsible physician. Additionally, there will be consultative support provided to our 6 hospices in urban Calgary, along with rotations with our world class Calgary Allied Mobile Palliative Program (CAMPP) which serves those who have experienced or are experiencing vulnerable housing.
The successful candidate will desire to work predominantly in the community, but opportunities will exist for interested physicians to also work in other clinical settings for variety and exposure. The physicians in the Service are also required to participate in an on-call schedule to provide after-hours coverage, which would also include some acute care consultative work on weekends.
In addition, the physicians in the Service are encouraged to apply for academic appointment in the Division of Palliative Medicine, Department of Oncology, University of Calgary. The Division is extensively involved in a program of Palliative Medicine education for medical students and rotating residents, offers a highly regarded palliative medicine residency, provides opportunities for teaching in other Faculties at the University of Calgary, and has many active opportunities to conduct research in Palliative Medicine.
Physicians who participate in the consult service group receive payment through a clinical alternative relationship plan (ARP) that has been negotiated with Alberta Health (Government of Alberta).
