The Vulcan Medical Clinic is recruiting a full-time (or part-time) physician with training in Family Medicine. The position requires a full scope of practice that includes primary care clinic (including walk-ins), inpatients (acute care and long term care), and emergency room coverage.

A full-time position includes 4 days of clinic per week + 1 night on call during the week and 1 weekend of call every 4 weeks (Friday morning to Monday morning).

The Vulcan Community Health Centre is not a labour and delivery site. The nearest obstetrical facility is 65km away.

The successful applicant must be comfortable handling all types of emergencies including obstetrics with no back-up physician available.

The Vulcan Medical Clinic is located within the Vulcan Community Health Centre (VCHC). A major renovation of the Vulcan Community Health Centre was completed in 2020 which included a significant expansion of the Vulcan Medical Clinic. The clinic has 16 exam rooms, consult rooms, procedure rooms, and office space. Vulcan has reliable high speed fibre optic internet. The clinic uses Wolf EMR and there are computer stations in each exam room.

  • 24/7 Emergency Department
  • No. of Inpatient Beds: 8
  • No. of Long Term Care Beds: 15 (at VCHC) plus an additional 46 beds at Vulcan Extendicare
  • Onsite Lab, X-ray, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetic Services, Adult Day Support, Home Care, and Public Health
  • Visiting Psychiatrist and Pediatrician.
  • The local Primary Care Network provides an in-house Primary Care Nurse to assist with chronic disease management and a part-time panel manager.

About the Community of Vulcan:

The community of Vulcan has a population of approximately 2,000 and is conveniently located one hour southeast of Calgary and one hour northwest of Lethbridge. Vulcan County encompasses additional communities served by Vulcan physicians including Milo, Carmangay, Lomond, and Champion and several hamlets. The countys total population is approximately 6,900. There is a significant increase in the service population during the summer in the recreational areas of McGregor Lake and Little Bow Provincial Park.

Farming, ranching, and oil and gas are the current economic base of the county. However, new green energy projects have started within the county including a wind and solar farm. Several other new businesses have opened including a microbrewery and with these new opportunities we are predicting population growth.

The community ofVulcanhas a daycare, kindergarten, elementary school, and secondary school. There are variety of recreational opportunities including an 18-hole golf course, newly renovated outdoor pool and waterpark, 5km walking path, curling, hockey, and fitness centre. Nearby provincial parks (within 30 minutes) offer swimming, boating, and fishing. Waterton National Park is a 2 hour drive from Vulcan. There are endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in all seasons; snowmobile touring is available in the Crowsnest Pass area and skiing/snowboarding at Westcastle which are approximately a 2 hour drive away.
