Reporting to the AZMD for Surgery, the Surgical Access Improvement Lead will work in a dyad model along with a site Operations Surgical lead, supporting key activities and dependencies for the successful implementation and evaluation of the FAST methodologies at their site.

In a competent and professional manner, the Contractor will:

1.Assist with organizing Zone-specific Centralized Referral for surgical subspecialties in the zone, including:

i.Recruit surgeons leaders to design and customize subspecialty-specific centralized access processes (based upon provincially-created standards for each specialty)

ii.Work with Zone-specific Centralized Access Consultants to design and operationalize processes

iii.Co-lead design meetings for centralized access for each subspecialty

iv.Liaise with AHS Operations and Physician Leads in the zone regarding the launch of centralized access

2.Co-lead implementation of a specialty advice service for each surgical subspecialty in the Zone (in conjunction with AHS Consultants, Primary Care Leads for the Zone, Surgical leads and AHS Zone Operations Leads)

3.Customization and/or development of surgical pathways for patients and referring doctors (Referral phase)

4.Provide recommendations to support long-term Access Bundle viability and access strategies for the Zone

Resources for change management will be provided through the Alberta Surgical Initiative.

The Surgical Access Improvement Leads will achieve success by:

advocating for and articulating the benefits of improving access to surgery, and inspiring others to change

engaging with their site and zone specialists in Surgery, Anesthesiology and Gynecology, local Primary Care Networks and family doctors to improve how care is delivered

fostering partnerships between specialists and family doctors

working with eReferral and Path to Care

setting priorities, timelines and an action plan for the work

developing a standard process to assist groups with change management

reporting regularly to stakeholders on progress towards agreed access improvement goals

use of AHS email will be required


The Surgical Access Improvement Lead will have the following pre-requisite experience, skills, and knowledge:

the ability to undertake data-driven decision-making

    The Contractor shall provide services to the South Zone CRH as a Surgical Access Improvement Lead.

    The Surgical Access Improvement Lead will coordinate the implementation of the Alberta Surgical Initiative (ASI). The Lead will coordinate access improvement work with all hospital sites and Primary Care Networks in the Zone.
