Job Details

Responsibilities/Duties:

Program Description: Urgent Psychiatric Consultation Clinic (UPCC) – Sunridge Medical Gallery, NE Calgary

The UPCC - NE provides single session psychiatric assessments for adults with addiction and/or mental health concerns who have been referred by their family physician with a clearly identified and specific clinical question related to diagnostic clarification and/or treatment recommendation. The UPCC is primarily designed to support the work of family physicians treating suspected and/or confirmed addiction and mental health concerns. Family physicians will refer their patients via Access Mental Health, the single point of access to mental health programs and services in Calgary zone.

UPCC - NE offers a one-time routine assessment and is not designed to provide crisis intervention or ongoing treatment service. Follow up appointments are therefore typically not available in this program. UPCC applies a harm reduction approach to issues related to substance abuse but will not accept a primary substance abuse concern as a valid referral. The program will also not accept referrals that are primarily for the purposes of independent medical examinations, assessments for legal proceedings, insurance claims, WCB claims or court related paperwork. Psychiatric assessment reports will be sent to the referring family physician.

Where applicable, appropriate patients may be referred from the Psychiatric Emergency Services at Peter Lougheed Center (PLC) for psychiatric assessment at the UPCC – NE. These patients will be discharged, following their one-time assessment, to the care of their family physician for ongoing treatment supervision.

Administrative staff are available to the support the work of psychiatrists, including in relation to managing appointment scheduling and minimizing no shows by patients. Psychiatric assessment reports will be transcribed via a dedicated central dictation telephone line.
