Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the University of Calgary invite applications for the joint position of Zone Clinical Department Head, Cardiac Sciences, Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services and Academic Head, Department of Cardiac Sciences, Cumming School of Medicine. The anticipated start date for this position is April 1, 2023.

The Zone Clinical Department Head will:

  • Promote high quality standards of clinical care and assist Zonal Programs with performance appraisals of physicians.
  • Develop and maintain common clinical goals and objectives for members of the Department incorporating use of a three-to-five-year plan.
  • Promote quality assurance and continuing quality improvement activities for the services provided by the Department.
  • Provide recommendations regarding resource allocation, technology assessment and related policies and procedures in collaboration with the AHS-CZ.
  • Encourage departmental members to work on the development and adaptation of Clinical Practice Guidelines to meet local needs

Departmental Structure

  • Through the process outlined in the Medical Staff Bylaws, the ZCDH is to develop and maintain a divisional structure that supports and represents all the members of the Department. With the approval of the AHS-CZ and its Zone Medical Administration Committee (ZMAC), the ZCDH will appoint departmental officers such as Deputy Head(s); Education Coordinator(s), etc. and may create Sections within the department.
  • In consultation with the AHS-CZ, recruit Section Chiefs and department members as reflected in the Department's Physician Resource Plan. The recruitment of Section Chiefs should involve the CSM where appropriate.
  • Maintain Departmental representation on appropriate committees within the AHS-CZ.
  • Develop appropriate internal committees within the Department to support the work of the Department.

Recruitment and Retention of Department Members

The Zone Clinical Department Head will:

  • Work with Zonal programs to ensure that sufficient medical staff are recruited into the discipline to meet identified health service needs of the Community, Department, affiliated institutions and the CSM.
  • Ensure that all Medical Staff have, and maintain, the necessary training and experience and possess the appropriate credentials for initial appointment and each reappointment to the Medical Staff. This shall be in consultation with the Departmental Executive committee.
  • Ensure maintenance of competence, professional standards of care, and ethical conduct.
  • Enhance the relationship of non-privileged AHS-CZ physicians as a part of the Department / Section.
  • Ensure that a practical plan to optimize physician retention is developed and implemented.
  • Work in conjunction with the Zone Medical Director, Calgary Zone and external partners to develop physician funding and remuneration models that support excellence in the provision of clinical service and academic endeavours.
