This 0.5 FTE position is governed by the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules, and reports to the AZMD, Emergency Medicine, Suburban Hospitals, Patient Flow. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring standards of care are being met in the department and support for research and teaching is readily available.

This position provides input into the development of policies and criteria for procedures as it relates to Emergency Medicine, reviewing and recommending privileges for physicians, and evaluating the performance of medical staff working within the Department.

  • Effective and Consistent Communication: Having a current AHS email address reviewed at least every 3 days to ensure a predictable communication channel.
  • Annually meeting with Zone Section Chiefs and Department Facility Chiefs to:
    • Review performance for the previous year;
    • Establish shared objectives for the upcoming year; and
    • Ensure objectives are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound.
  • Evaluating the performance of medical staff in accordance with policy and Medical Staff By-laws, rules and regulations in co-operation with the Facility Medical Directors and Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry where applicable.
  • Quality Management: Ensure standards of care and defined health outcomes are being achieved. This should include:
    • Ongoing monitoring of the quality of clinical/medical practice;
    • Ensuring effective processes and mechanisms are in place to encourage best practices and improve clinical outcomes/quality;
    • Functioning as a strong advocate for sound medical/clinical practice;
    • Participating on internal steering committee for evaluation; and
    • Participating in evaluations.
  • Academic Liaison: Ensure effective support at the site level for teaching and research where appropriate including:
    • Liaison with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry for planning, recruitment, monitoring and evaluation;
    • Participating on recruitment and selection of joint academic/Edmonton Zone medical and scientific staff; and
    • Ensuring mutually supportive relationships between Edmonton Zone clinical programs and the Faculty of Medicine clinical departments.
  • Patient Safety: In collaboration with other Zone Clinical Departments and the Zone Medical Administrative Committee, advocate for the provision of high quality and safe patient care within the Zone Clinical Department and coordinated service delivery within all Facilities and communities of the Zone.
  • Dealing with on-site accreditation issues, teaching standards, and Royal College requirements.
  • Chairing Zone Clinical Department Executive Committee meetings a minimum of at least five times per year (January, March, May, September and November) and providing minutes to ZMAC for Consent Agenda approval.
  • Attending ZMAC meetings (a minimum of at least 8 of 10 in a year in person or with an alternate).
  • Advancing the perspective, advice and resource requirements of Zone Clinical Department members.
  • Assigning duties and responsibilities to members of the Zone Clinical Department.
  • Promoting and representing the activities of the Zone Clinical Department.
  • Participating in Strategic Clinical Network (SCN) activities.
  • Performing all other duties assigned by the AHS Bylaws and Rules or other duties delegated by the Edmonton Zone Medical Director.


The ideal candidate will have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution and a passion for quality and patient safety. They will be an inclusive and visionary leader with significant experience in medical leadership and is considered a strong clinician by peers.

The successfulcandidate will possess the ability to form strong interpersonal relationships, have demonstrated supervisory experience, and be an excellent clinician with the respect of their peers. The successful candidate also will be committed to fulfilling clinical and non-clinical duties as a representative of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Candidates must be Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)certified, be eligible to work in Canada, and hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appointment to the AHS Medical Staff. Candidates should have evidence of formal administrative education and training.
